 India ratified the Paris Agreement on climate change by depositing the instruments of ratification with the United Nation on October 2, 2016, the 147th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.India is the 62nd country to ratify the agreement which will enter into force one month after 55 countries that account for 55 per cent of global emissions ratify the agreement.
 GSAT-18 that aims at providing telecommunications services for the country by strengthening ISRO’S current fleet of 14 operational telecom satellites was launched into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
GSAT-18 is the 20th satellite from ISRO to be launched by the European space agency.

Competitiveness Report for 2016-17. Top five ranking countries are Switzerland (1st), Singapore (2nd), United States(3rd), Netherlands (4th) and Germany (5th).
In the 2016-17 edition of GCI, India has jumped 16 places compared to 55th position in 2015-16 GCI.
 India continues to rank low at 130th position in terms of ease of doing business. In the World Bank’s 2016 ‘Doing Business’ repot, India’s place remained unchanged from last year’s original ranking of 130 among the 190 economies that were assessed on various parameters.
 India improved its ranking in the World Economic Forum’s Gender Gap Report 2016 has by climbing 21 spots to rank 87th.
 The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved ‘Project SAKSHAM’ , a New Indirect Tax Network (Systems Integration) of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC).
It will help in extension of the Indian Customs Single Window Interface for Facilitating Trade (SWIFT) and other taxpayer friendly initiatives under Digital India and Ease of doing Business of CBEC.
 The Centre has constituted a four-member Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI), under the Chairmanship of M.S. Sahoo.
 ICICI Bank is the first bank in India and among the first few globally to use blockchain technology in realtime basis to exchange and authenticate remittance transaction messages. With the blockchain technology, the entire process takes only a few minutes as against a few days earlier.
India-Russia Ink Defence, Energy Deals:
The six important deals of 16 agreements between India and Russia are :-
 A group led by Russian state oil major Rosneft agreed to buy a refinery unit of the Essar group and facilities including a port, for $12.9 billion.
 The two countries to build at least 200 Kamov 226T helicopters in India for defence forces.
 India will also buy surface- to-air missile systems and stealth frigate from Moscow.
 Putin said Russia will be able to build a dozen nuclear reactors in India over the next 20 years.
 An MoU signed to set up an investment fund of $1 billion by National Investment and Infrastructure Fund and Russian Direct Investment Fund.
 A joint study will be commissioned to transport gas from Russia to India Via a cross-continental pipeline.

MEDICINE- Japanese biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi, a professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology was honoured with the Nobel prize in medicine for his ground-breaking research on autophagy, a process whereby cells ‘eat’ themselves when they break down in body.
PHYSICS- Three British- born scientists David Touless , Duncan Haldane and Michael Kosterlitz were declared the joint winner of the 2016 Noble prize in Physics.
CHEMISTRY- Jean-Pierre Sauvage of France, J. France Stoddart of Bernard Feringe of the Netherlands shared the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
PEACE- Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos won the Nobel prize on October 7.
ECONOMIC- British born Oliver Hart and Bengt Holmstrom of Finland Were declared the joint winners of the noble prize in Economic.
LITERATURE- The 2016 Noble Prize in Literature went to singer and songwriter Bob Dylan, who became the first American to win the Noble in Literature.
 C. Radhakrishnan chosen for Mathrubhumi Literary Award 2016.
 Paul Beatty was on October 25, 2016 honoured with the prestigious Man Booker Prize for his novel ‘The Sellout’.
